Mystery film: 10 - revealed!

Congratulations to Steve over on twitter who correctly knew that this week's mystery film was of course, Singing in the Rain.

If you haven't seen Singing in the Rain, you really should; it's musical fun for all the family, and has the benefit of being about a critical moment in film history. Certainly it has more laughs than Sunset Boulevard does!

Another film will be up next Wednesday. Have a good weekend!

Mystery film: 10

It's mystery film time again folks! We're moving the day of our mystery film so that it doesn't clash with our Regal Film Quote Quiz over on twitter. So, from now on, the What's Showing Mystery Film will become a Wednesday feature.

Welcome to What's Showing Wednesday then! And here's your first picture.

What do you make of this one? It's a classic!

Post your answers either as blog comments here, on the facebook group or on twitter.

Mystery film: 9 - revealed!

Congratulations to Steve and Ian (who snuck in right at the last minute like someone catching the last elevator up to the observation deck) both on twitter who correctly identified the heart on the side of the Empire State Building from Sleepless in Seattle!

We'll have another mystery film next week; look out for a move to a new day of the week...

Behind the Scenes

If you're interested in the progress of the restoration work at the cinema and want to see first-hand the work that's going on, then you'll probably be very interested to know that we'll be holding some behind-the-scenes tours there at the beginning of March.

Places are very limited as the cinema is still a construction site, so pre-booking is absolutely essential. A tour guide will show you two of the key restoration locations and tell you about the work that has happened already and what there still is to do.

Tours start at 10.00am, 10.30am, 11.00am, 11.30am and midday on Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd March.

To book a ticket, send an email to hao@tenburytown.org.uk specifying your preferred date and approximate time and we'll get back in touch with you asap.

Our open house event before the restoration work started was very popular, so if you're interested in these tours we suggest getting in touch quickly so you aren't disappointed!

Family Fun: If you were a mural artist...

Our mural artist is hard at work at the moment restoring the George Legge murals in the auditorium. For a half-term activity, here's an exercise for your creativity (or your children's)! If you were a mural artist and could paint anything you wanted onto the walls at the Regal, what would you paint?

You can even have a go at redecorating the lino floor on this design too!

If you'd like a larger copy of the sheet, just get in touch via email and we'll send one over to you.
Any designs you or your family do (everyone is welcome!) you can submit to us and we'll feature them here on the blog. The same goes for any of the what's on drawings you do. Just email them over to us and we'll make you famous (well, amongst the people who read the blog anyway)!
Get drawing!

Mystery film: 8 - revealed!

We had a couple of correct guesses this week, so either the mystery film wasn't as difficult as I thought or you're all well-versed in film. Congratulations either way! Especially to Steve on twitter and Vicky on facebook who correctly identified the film as WALL-E, the animated Disney-Pixar film.

Look out for a mid-week mystery film valentine special next week!

In focus: Terrazzo

Most people have probably walked over terrazzo most weeks of their life and never even realised it. You might have thought that you were walking over limestone, or marble, or granite, or perhaps some other stone, but despite its natural look terrazzo is a man-made material, made of a mixture of natural and man-made components.
Terrazzo floors are made up of stone (and sometimes glass) chips in a cement-like matrix. To lay a terrazzo floor, the area is first marked out on the floor, then the mixture of chips and cement poured into the area. Once it has set, the floor surface is ground down to be flat and then polished, giving the terrazzo its characteristic sparkle and shine.
Terrazzo has many benefits over stone for interior designers. Because you can mix the chips of any stone or glass, you can lay a floor of almost any colour, and because it is poured you can fill any shape, sometimes large, unbroken areas where you would be unable to bring in such a large slab of actual stone. Modern terrazzo floor are also often quite thin, less than half an inch deep, which makes the terrazzo floor light enough to use on upper floors of buildings. Terrazzo is also perfect for creating pictures and designs on a floor, because it can be poured into any shape.

The foyer and crush hall as well as the front steps at the Regal have a cream and green terrazzo floor. Over the years this has suffered damage in some places, and will be repaired as part of the restoration project.

Pictures of the front steps and the foyer, showing the terrazzo floor.
In the crush hall (bottom picture) you can see the beading between the slabs.

Terrazzo can also be used to create artworks on the floor. The patterns at the Regal are typical of art deco floor decoration. Modern artists still create terrazzo floor designs today. The video below shows one such art project, in a City Hall in Washington state in America.

Work on the terrazzo floors in the Regal will be starting within the next few weeks. We'll bring you more on it as we have it!

We hope you enjoyed this in-focus look at one of the techniques being re-created in our restoration work. Look out for more in the future!
